Why You Need Transmission Maintenance

August 2, 2017

Transmission Repair | LightHouse Automotive

Your transmission is one of the most important parts of your car. It transfers power from the engine to your wheels and the gears regulate speed. In a nutshell, your transmission is what makes your car move forward or backward as the speeds you desire. Neglecting transmission maintenance is not a good idea. Major transmission repairs, rebuilds or replacements can be expensive. The better you take care of your transmission , the longer it will last and the least likely you will require any significant repairs.

Standard Transmission Maintenance

At LightHouse Automotive , we offer standard transmission maintenance service packages. This will include a basic external inspection of the transmission housing and vital components to make sure there are no cracks, leaks or other concerns. The main purpose of the transmission service is to change the transmission fluid and replace the filter. These services need to be performed every 25,000-50,000 depending on your vehicle's factory recommended maintenance schedule , though your personal driving habits may also impact how often you need to replace the filter and fluid.

In some cases where the fluid is really bad, we might recommend a full fluid flush. This will be more expensive than a standard fluid change, but it ensures the transmission fluid running throughout the car is in good shape. A complete system flush is usually only required in really bad situations, though.

Checking Your Own Transmission Fluid

Just like your engine oil dipstick, there is also a separate dipstick in every vehicle's engine compartment that enables you to check the transmission fluid level and quality. Consult your owner's manual for more information on its location. Transmission fluid is typically bright red in color. If your fluid looks brown or dark, then it could be the sign of a transmission problem. If it is low, you can top it off or bring it into LightHouse Automotive. It's always worth making sure there are no leaks anywhere in the system.

Beyond standard maintenance services, LightHouse Automotive offers all the automatic and manual transmission repair and replacement services you need. If you think you might have transmission problems, we'll inspect it for you and get to the root of the issue. Then, we can make recommendations for repairs—or in serious cases, a full transmission rebuild or replacement. We'll walk you through the details and provide you with all your repair options so you can make an informed decision.

Some signs of transmission problems include fluid leaks, gears slipping or grinding, slow acceleration or trouble getting the car into gear.
