5 Simple Tips for Better Tire Maintenance

May 23, 2018

When you take care of your tires, they will take care of you and your car. You want your tires to be in good shape because they will provide better safety and overall performance for your vehicle. When it comes to tire care and maintenance, here are some simple tips from LightHouse Automotive that will help you keep your tires in the best shape possible.

1. Check Your Tire Pressure

At least once a month, take a few minutes to check your tire pressure. Keep a tire gauge in your glove compartment or use the gauges at the "Tire & Air" pump at your local gas station. Remember to check all four tires (and your spare if it's easily accessible) and make sure they are at proper air levels. If not, fill them back up accordingly. Maintaining consistent air pressure will help your tires last longer and can even help with things like fuel efficiency.

2. Check Your Tire Treads

Look at your tire treads regularly, as well. Try the very simple "penny test." [Click here to learn how.] If they are getting low or the tread levels are very uneven from tire to tire, then there may be other issues worth having looked at.

3. Get Your Wheel Alignment Tested

Any automotive shop will be able to check your wheel alignment. Proper wheel alignment will keep your treads wearing out more evenly and your tires will last longer. It will also keep you safer as a driver while helping your vehicle perform better overall.

4. Get Your Tires Rotated Regularly

One of the easiest and most important tips for tire care is to get in the habit of having your tires rotated every 5,000-6,000 miles. This service is usually paired with a routine oil change. If you get your oil changed every 3,000 miles, then have your tires rotated every other visit. If you have it changed every 5,000 miles, get a tire rotation with each service.

5. Have Your Brakes Inspected

Any number of vehicle components can lead to faster or uneven tire wear including differentials, axles, wheel bearings, transmission and more. However, your brake system is definitely one of the most important. Get your brakes checked regularly. If they are performing properly, it will help keep your tires lasting longer.

These are just a few easy ways to make sure your tires are doing their best and lasting as long as possible. If you are in Colorado Springs, CO and need help with your tires, wheel alignment, tire rotation, brakes or any automotive components, call LightHouse Automotive for honest service and fair repair pricing.
