Preparing Your Car's Heater and Defrosters for Winter

November 4, 2020

You might not think that fall is a good time to get your car's air conditioning system serviced , but it is. Remember, the A/C system also controls the heater and front window defrosters. Those are obviously important features in Colorado, where the winter temperatures dip below freezing. We get snow, ice, fog and rain through fall and well into spring, as well. Now is a great time to get your A/C system inspected, tested and serviced as we head into the coldest months of the year.

Stay Safe and Comfortable

Most Colorado Springs drivers will get plenty of use out of their heaters and defrosters this time of year. Of course, you want to stay comfortable while inside the vehicle. Few things feel better than cranking up the heat after spending a few minutes outside. Make sure your heater is providing ample heat, your vents are clean and your cabin air filter is replaced when necessary. Obviously, you need your defrosters working correctly, as well. You want to keep your windows as clean and clear as possible for better visibility during any bad weather days. The heat inside the vehicle paired with the cold outside of it lead to increased condensation and that's what gets the windows all fogged up to a point where you can hardly see anything.

Other Safety and Visibility Recommendations

Now is also a good time to get your windshield wiper blades looked at and replaced as needed, and you may also consider treating your windows. There are a lot of great and easy-to-use products out there to help prevent fogging, ice and moisture build-up on your windshield, rear window, rear-view mirrors and side windows. Your headlights, tail lights, fog lights and parking lights are also important to your own visibility and for other drivers on the road.

Rear Defroster Problems?

As for your rear defroster, that is actually more of an electronic component that isn't using forced hot air or vents to remove ice or fog. If your rear defroster isn't working well, you will want to get it inspected and repaired by a professional mechanic who knows what they are doing. It is often a wiring issue or other electrical problem hat you may not want to mess around with yourself.

Keep your car's heater and defroster in the best possible shape this winter, and help keep you and your family —not to mention all the drivers and pedestrians around you—safer on the road.
