Whether you drive a manual or automatic transmission , there may be a time when you feel it start to "slip." This is especially true if you have an older vehicle or it's been awhile since your last transmission service. A slipping transmission means that it is struggling to shift between gears and/or stay in gear. It could be the sign of a major transmission problem or you may just need minor transmission maintenance.

What Causes a Transmission to Slip?

In many cases, a slipping transmission is a result of a transmission fluid (or transmission oil, if you prefer) issue. Too little or too much fluid may be running through the system and that can cause the transmission to have a hard time staying in a particular gear. You might notice the slips only happen in certain gears, as well. What causes a transmission fluid problem is that the filter or one of the lines could be clogged, or there could be damage somewhere along the way that is resulting in a leak. Without the proper amount of transmission fluid doing what it is designed to do, it can lead to major transmission problems. Often times, a standard transmission service (changing out the transmission fluid, filter and pan gasket) will resolve the issue before it develops into something much worse.

In other cases, the transmission might be slipping between gears because of an internal mechanical problem within the transmission itself. One of the gears could be damaged, a sensor might be faulty or the torque converter may not be working right (in automatic transmission vehicles). Whatever the problem is, it is worth having the transmission inspected by an automotive repair technician that can diagnose the issue and recommend the necessary repairs.

Signs of Transmission Problems

Transmissions are especially complex and can be expensive to repair, rebuild or replace. Like any other automotive problems, the sooner you deal with an issue you notice, the more likely you are to prevent further internal damage. At the first signs of a slipping transmission, you'll want to reach out to a top mechanic like LightHouse Automotive here in Colorado Springs.
