1. Worn Brake Pads
This is the most common cause of squeaky brakes and it is also the easiest fix. Your brake pads may be worn out and it's time to get them replaced. If you wait too long, the sounds will only get worse as metal grinds on metal and potentially more damage is caused.
2. Dirt and Grease
Sometimes brake pads, rotors and other components just get dirty. This is especially common during the wet winter months when there is a lot of dirt, mud, grease and grime getting kicked up underneath your vehicle. An inspection, tune-up and brake system cleaning will take care of this issue.
3. Glazed Pads or Rotors
Sometimes a brake caliper will stick and constantly apply slight pressure between the pads and rotors. You may not feel it as a driver, but eventually the rotors and pads will become hardened and crystallized (aka "glazed"). They will lose effectiveness and you will definitely start to hear the noises after awhile.
4. Improper Rotor Surface
When you get a brake job done, the rotors must be resurfaced by an expert to make sure they are true. If the wrong rotors are used or the surfaces are improper in anyway, it will ultimately lead to further brake problems.
5. Failing Components
Brake systems are intricate, so there are any number of small parts that can fail or get out of alignment. This includes anti-rattle clips, insulation shims and other components.
6. Non-Brake Issues
Sometimes, it's not the brakes at all that are causing these noises. It could be the wheels, suspension, bearings, axles, differential, clutch or any part of the drivetrain assembly that is causing the noises.
