Are You Due for a Brake Inspection?

November 28, 2018

Brake Inspections | LightHouse Automotive

It's always important to make sure your vehicle's brakes are in good shape. You should get them inspected at least a couple times of year and standard brake services should part of your regularly scheduled maintenance plan. However, during the winter months here in Colorado, having good brakes is even more important. Roads get slick, visibility is worse and there are simply more safety concerns facing every driver.

Your brakes can literally save your life.

If you haven't had your brakes inspected in awhile, now might be a good time to visit LightHouse Automotive in Colorado Springs for a thorough brake inspection. Our experienced automotive technicians will check everything out. If all the components are in good shape, then you can get back out on the road and drive confidently. If there are issues, we'll let you know what parts may need to be replaced and what other brake system repairs may be recommended.

Here are a few of the key things that LightHouse Automotive will inspect:

1. Brake Pads

Brake pads wear out with time and use, and they need to be replaced every so often. If you hear screeching or squealing every time you press the brake pedal, then there's a good chance your brake pads are low. They are easy and inexpensive to replace, so it's better to change out the brake pads before more significant damage is done.

2. Brake Rotors

Like the brake pads, the rotors can get worn down over time. They can usually be remachined, or they may need to be replaced if the damage is significant enough.

3. Brake Calipers & Mechanical Components

The calipers are what control the pads and provide the braking motion. If they are weak or not performing correctly, it will greatly impact the effectiveness of your brakes. Our technicians take a careful look at the calipers and other mechanical brake components during a brake inspection.

4. Brake Lines

It's important that the brake lines are working properly. All hoses, connections and gaskets should be in good shape and tightly secured to prevent fluid leaks or other brake issues.

5. Brake Fluid

LightHouse Automotive will take a look at the brake fluid , which provides hydraulic pressure to power the brakes. If the fluid is low or of poor quality, it can be refilled or replaced. In serious cases, a full fluid flush may be recommended.

6. Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)

The more modern the vehicle, the more advanced the braking system will be. We check all the sensors and calibrations to ensure that the ABS and other features are working as they should.

7. Emergency/Parking Brake

Though it rarely needs repairs, it's still worth inspecting the emergency/parking brake just to make sure. Obviously, the more you use it, the more it needs to be maintained.

With a complete brake inspection at LightHouse Automotive , you will know how all your brake system components are doing and what repairs may be needed. We'll provide a full report and walk you through everything, so you can make informed repair decisions.
