9 Fall Car Care Tips for Colorado Drivers

September 27, 2017

fall tips | LightHouse Automotive

The fall season is upon us. The leaves are turning colors and the weather will only get more unpredictable as we head into winter in Colorado Springs. Having your vehicle in good shape is important when you live in a place with four distinct seasons. With some simple maintenance steps, it will perform better and you will be safer as a driver.

As we get into fall and start preparing for winter rain and snow, here are some Colorado car care tips from LightHouse Automotive for you to follow:

1. Replace Your Windshield Wipers

Visibility is so important when it's raining, snowy or foggy out. Make sure your windshield wipers are working well, and get them replaced if needed.

2. Check Your Headlights

Headlights are also vital when it comes to visibility. As the days get shorter, you need good headlights. Make sure yours are bright and the housings are clean for optimal performance.

3. Battery Test

Colder weather can really drain your car's battery, so get it tested. Then have it recharged or replaced if needed.

4. Make Sure Your Tires Are in Good Shape

Have the tread depth tested so you can get maximum traction during the fall and winter seasons. Keep rotating them every 5,000-6,000 for even wear.

5. Check Wheel Alignment

Proper wheel alignment will improve the handling of your vehicle and help keep your tire treads wearing evenly.

6. Brake Inspection

You need your brakes working well when driving conditions are more demanding. Be sure and have your brakes inspected by a professional.

7. Check Fluid Levels

Your car depends on a lot of fluids to keep it running well throughout the year. Check your engine oil, transmission fluid, radiator coolant, windshield wiper fluid and power steering fluid. Get them topped off as needed, or consider getting fluid changes or flushes if the fluid is low or discolored.

8. Take Care of Seals, Belts and Hoses

Any rubber components will naturally degrade over time, especially when dealing with harsh changes in weather. Definitely get all rubber elements checked out before the winter season comes, otherwise something simple could turn into bigger problems later.

9. Get Your Oil Changed

This should be done no matter what the weather, but getting your oil changed every 3,000-5,000 miles is good for your vehicle and helps prevent other costly damage.

Follow these simple tips and your car will stay in better shape throughout the winter.
