8 Helpful Car Care Tips for Summer Travel

July 12, 2017

open-road2 | LightHouse Automotive

Can you believe it's already July? Summertime is here and it is such a great time of year to be in Colorado Springs. We are so blessed to have all four seasons here, and we always look forward to some summer sunshine. It's also the time of year when many people pack up their cars, trucks and RVs to hit the road for vacations. Whether you are visiting Colorado Springs or about to head out of town on your own travels, LightHouse Automotive has prepared these helpful summer car care tips.

1. Pay Attention to Gas Mileage

There are pros and cons to long summer road trips. On one hand, highway driving will usually give you better gas mileage than day-to-day city commutes. However, you may also be carrying larger loads in your vehicle (more passengers, luggage or even trailers being towed), which can also affect your mileage. Always keep a close eye on your gas meter so you don't run out in between pit stops!

2. Check Your Fluids

Your car has many different fluids that keep it running properly. Be sure to take the time to test the fluid levels and quality of your oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid, brake fluid and coolant. Consult your owner's manual to learn how or bring your car into LightHouse Automotive for a check-up before a long vacation.

3. Change Your Oil

You should be having the oil changed every 3,000-5,000 miles, depending on your factory recommended maintenance schedule. Even if you are a bit ahead of schedule, it's never a bad idea to get your oil and oil filter changed ahead of a long road trip.

4. Tire Check-Up

Your tires should be rotated every 5,000-6,000 miles. Make sure the tread depth is good and the tires have proper air pressure before hitting the road.

5. Battery Strength

LightHouse Automotive can easily test your car's battery. You'll want to be confident that it is working well so you don't get stranded out of town.

6. Inspect Your Brakes

Especially if you are venturing deeper into the Rockies on your vacation, you'll want to get your brakes checked. Keep them in good shape and you will enjoy a much safer drive.

7. Get Your Wheel Alignment Checked

This one often goes overlooked, but it is important. Misaligned wheels can lead to uneven tire tread wear, poor handling and also less gas mileage. Let LightHouse Automotive perform a wheel alignment check for you and make adjustments if needed.

8. Have Fun!

Above all else, cherish your fun road trips with family and friends. Have a great summer with lots of adventure!
