Motor mounts (also known as engine mounts) serve a very simple, yet extremely important function in your vehicle. They represent the connection point between the engine and the chassis. They are typically a combination of metal and rubber. The metal is there for support and security while the rubber component helps absorb and minimize the vibrations.
As you can imagine, the engine is generating a lot of power and torque with many fast-moving parts inside. This causes an incredible about of vibration, making the role of the motor mounts so vital. Yet, as with most vehicle parts, the motor mounts (and especially the rubber seals) will often deteriorate over time with regular wear and tear.
If you are having a motor mount issue, it is very important to get it looked at by a professional mechanic and repaired as soon as possible. A failing motor mount can lead to serious engine damage and will also greatly impact the performance of the vehicle. It is very unsafe to drive with a broken motor mount.
Here are a few common signs that you have a failing or broken motor mount:
1. Heavy Vibrations
If you feel a lot of vibration in the vehicle while you are driving, there’s a good chance it’s the motor mount. In many cases, a rubber seal just needs to be replace. Excessive vibrations can also be a sign of wheel alignment, suspension, exhaust system or tire issues, so it’s a good idea to get it checked out.
2. Impact Noises
One of the most common signs of a failing motor mount is what we call “impact noises” that you will hear coming from the engine bay. You may hear significant clunking, banging or rattling, and that means the engine could be loose at the point of one or more of the motor mounts.
3. Engine Movement
A very obvious sign of a broken motor mount is if the engine is clearly moving and shifting in the engine compartment. If it is moving forward, backward or side-to-side, you will likely feel it when you accelerate rapidly, corner hard or come to a quick stop. It may be accompanied by an impact noise to really let you know there is a problem with one or more of the engine mounts.
